Sasso Chickens: Quality Broilers with a Country-Chicken Feel

Some markets are looking for more country chicken and less of the butterball look. Sasso Chickens are another option that fits somewhere between the Jackie and the Freedom Ranger. This multi colored bird will reach market weight a few days slower than the Freedom Ranger. They are heavy-bodied, with long keels and lighter, speckled feathers, known for their yellow skin and great flavor. This breed, hatched and shipped directly from our family hatcheries to you, will add character to your free-range farmyard, backyard, or broiler business.

In 2005, Kendall and his wife Ginger started hatching chicks in their two-car detached garage. The operation eventually expanded and was launched as Fox Farm & Hatchery, Inc. The Foxes then purchased the Freedom Ranger brand and incorporated the business under the name Freedom Ranger Hatchery, Inc.

The Sasso Chicken: A Country Broiler

As mentioned above, if you’re looking for Sasso male broiler chicks, you’ve come to the right place. We’re happy to provide these meaty, slow-growing broilers to you—straight from our family’s incubators.

Characteristics and origin of Sasso Chickens

These crossbred, slow-growing, heavy-bodied, red broilers have been developed to have a longer keel and to provide more of a “country chicken” feel. They are not related to the Freedom Ranger chicken, which originated from the Label Rouge Program in France. Sassos reach 5-6 pounds by 10-12 weeks of age.

SASSO is one of the founding fathers of traditional poultry breeding. Its story began in the 1950’s when Serge Perrault, a poultry farmer based in the South West of France, decided to preserve and select local strains of poultry, developing as a pioneer, the first traditional breeders: The T lines were born. In 1978, SASSO was officially created thanks to a cooperative of farmers involved in “Label Rouge” chicken. Settled in the middle of the Landes forest, SASSO could then grow in a protected area, developing more and more strains dedicated to traditional poultry and colored chickens.

Sasso was built with decades of experience in preserving, breeding and improving rustic strains. Thanks to the diversity of these lines’, their French origin, as well as the development of the Label Rouge, it became as an evidence that the SASSO lines could fit for many other parts of the world. In 1990 Sasso settled a second location in Sarthe, closer to Paris’ airports, allowing them to export this bird all over the world much easier.
