The Sagitta Chicken: A Well-Balanced, Hardy, Dual-Purpose Breed

Sagittas are for chicken farmers who want to fill their barnyards with multi-talented chickens. This breed’s heritage highlights all the best in egg-laying and meat production—everything a dual-purpose chicken should be. Just take a look at its ancestors, and you’ll see where those capable genes come from!

The Sagitta Chicken’s Heritage

Developed by Henry Saglio, and similar to the Aquila Chicken, the Sagitta was bred to be used for both meat production and egg-laying. This dual-purpose chicken is a cross of three breeds: Rhode Island Red, New Hampshire, and Cornish Cross.

The Sagitta’s Notable Characteristics

At 16 weeks of age, a Sagitta hen’s live weight will be between 5 and 5.5 pounds. And between 12 and 13 weeks, the cockerels will weigh 5 pounds, making them perfect as a meat bird for frying pans at an early age. This chicken is an excellent layer for a dual-purpose breed, giving its caretakers 170 to 190 light brown, extra large to large eggs every year. They are calm additions to any farm, backyard, or homestead.
