They make superb additions to backyards and homesteads, foraging and eating insects that bug you and your other animals. Their reliable egg laying and excellent meat production make them one of our best-selling breeds.

History of the Rhode Island Red Chicken

Breeders first developed the Rhode Island Red chicken breed in New England during the late 19^th Century. Selective breeding involving Red Malay Game, Cochin, Leghorns, Java, and Shanghai birds resulted in this all-American breed. It is also the state bird of Rhode Island and is featured on a monument at the William Tripp Farm in Little Compton, Rhode Island.

The Rhode Island Red’s Most Prized Features

A Rhode Island Red hen will produce between 250 and 300 medium to large, light-brown eggs per year. This egg production comes to about four to six eggs per week, making them an excellent choice for those in the egg-selling business. The Rhode Island Red chicken is treasured for its egg-laying aptitude and cold hardiness, but it can also be used for its flavorful meat and as a show bird. Roosters weigh around 8.5 pounds, and hens reach approximately 6.5 pounds.

In addition to the delicious flavor of Rhode Island Red eggs and meat, this chicken is particularly beautiful. With deep red plumage, mostly black tail, and a single or rose comb, the Rhode Island Red breed is one of the prettiest birds you’ll have on your farm.
