In 2012, Art started helping out at Freedom Ranger Hatchery. It didn’t take long for the newest hatchery to be added to the family—initially known as Art’s Hatchery, and now Hillside Hatchery. Specializing in egg-layer breeds, the newest of our hatcheries is already well-established, providing high-quality birds for sale…just like the rest of our family of hatcheries at Freedom Ranger.

The Reliable, Steady, Egg-Laying Barred Rock

When you think of an all-American backyard chicken, the Barred Rock should come to mind. Its unique black-and-white stripes, triangular-shaped body, red face and comb…all make this chicken distinguishable from other breeds. It may not lay as many eggs as other egg-laying breeds, but its reliability and hardiness—along with its meat-producing qualities—make up for any shortcomings in that department.

The Barred Rocks’ Heritage

Barred Rock chickens were first bred in the 1800s, when Black Javas and Dominiques were crossed. These chickens have been steadily supplying American homesteads with eggs for many generations.

The Celebrated Characteristics of Barred Rocks

A docile breed, Barred Rock hens will start laying eggs at 20 weeks of age, and will reliably provide 200 large, light-brown eggs per year. Barred Rock hens can weigh up to 7.5 pounds, while roosters will top out at around 9.5 pounds. Their large size, along with their yellow skin, make them great choices for rich, heavy roasters.

It’s Time to Order Your Barred Rock Chickens

Would you like Barred Rock hens, roosters, or a mix (straight-run)? Would you like to have them vaccinated against Marek’s Disease? And what date would you like your chicks to ship?

These are the questions you’ll answer as you move through our simple ordering process, outlined in the chart above. Should you have any questions while ordering, contact us here.
